Introduction to Premodern Japanese Poetry and Poetics

An audio-visual introduction to Premodern Japanese Poetry and its Role in Society. This class will introduce how to compose poetry a variety of Japanese poetic forms along with the social, cultural, and political contexts with which these forms are associated. The class will begin with a social and cultural introduction beginning with Chōka and continuing through proto-haiku. Then, several poetic forms including tanka, renga, and proto-haiku will be discussed in detail.
