Upon The Hem: Finishing Your Skirt in Late Period

Hemming wasn’t the only option for late period women’s gowns. This class will explore all the different ways the bottom edge of a skirt or dress could be finished, using extant examples wherever possible. This class will include discussion of how to do each hem treatment, plus which would mostly likely be used in various clothing applications, with different fabrics, for different social classes, etc. We’ll also touch on skirts more generally – how many would be worn and how they might be decorated and constructed.
