Premodern Japanese Clothing

A historical survey of clothing in premodern Japan covering a variety of societal roles in the court, the military, and the clergy. Includes an introduction to the use of kazane (color combinations) and kamon (heraldry) in textiles and clothing. This class will. not only include a brief introduction to hats and footwear, but will also introduce things customarily carried on the person such as ōgi and shaku.
